Boy with Chicken was inspired by the 19th-century sculpture Enfant au Coq by Adriano Cecioni. Alan reinterpreted the composition through reclaimed metal, using a rusted patina in place of the colour and surface of the bronze original.
The work explores the struggle of trying to hold onto something wanted or loved against the opposing urge to escape, while retaining a deliberately comic, almost pantomime quality. It was completed in 2022 as a self-initiated work and is currently available.
Made from car clutches, retired tools, cutlery, mechanical salvage, bicycle and motorbike sprockets, chain, wheel rims and gears. The tunic incorporates a component from an aircraft turbine cooling system.
The sculpture stands on a base made from a motorbike wheel rim, echoing the form of the original sculpture’s base through Alan’s own reclaimed-material language.
