The 14th/ 20th Kings Hussars Memorial Sculpture

3 years ago, I received a phone call From a Chap named Darren Walker. He asked if I could create a regimental hawk memorial sculpture from items found in the scrap bins of a few army barracks in the UK.The piece was to somehow be set within a stone obelisk We obtained retired tools, cogs and gears, as well as an array of nuts and bolts and miscellaneous items.I was invited into this project as an artist to create a visual representation and likeness of the Hawk insignia with the orb and sceptre. My vision was to create the piece with clearly defined detail for the front of the sculpture,as it will be viewed through the stone.I also wanted to add a more rugged sculptural element with a contemporary concept to represent the officers, infantry, engineers, personnel, operatives and individuals that make up an army regiment. The oval hole in the stone obelisk was cut by hand by talented stone mason Nick Johnson. The sculpture has a back plate which is bolted to a 40mm glass rod running through the centre of the hole. The sculpture has been galvanized and painted This piece is now a permanent memorial at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.

I was that man who contacted you way back when and I’m so glad that I did. What you made was nothing short of spectacular. You helped us to realise our dream that will live on forever. Every time I see a photo I literally ebb with pride. I will never be able to thank you enough Alan and I will sing your praises for as long as I live.

I make sculptural artworks from mostly found and recycled metal.  My creative exploration began in my childhood, making fantastical hybrid creatures using old toys and a tube of glue. Today I make animals and creatures from mostly found and recycled metal; transforming every day objects into detailed, sculptural artworks.
